The panel consisted of ANZ Bank chairman John Morschel, Telstra's Catherine Livingstone, Boral and Westfarmers chairman Bob Every, and NAB's Michael Chaney. The need for a price on carbon emerged as a bit of surprise. This issue has got a long way to run but seems to be unstoppable at this stage.

Iron Ore Holdings

Iron Ore Holdings announced that it hopes to continue discussions with Rio Tinto about a sales deal, despite failing to finalise details before an agreement between the two companies lapsed on Sunday. The Kerry Stokes-controlled IOH first reached an agreement to sell Rio 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore a year in July 2008.

Macarthur Coal

Macarthur Coal announced full-year sales figures, with a record 5.32 million tonnes of coal sold. The figure represents a 15.3 percent increase compared to the previous year, and comes despite a fall in sales during the June quarter. Macarthur attributed the positive result to increased production - which rose 7.7 percent - and a sell-down of coal stocks.
