Business Leaders Forum

The Australian and Deutsche Bank Business Leaders Forum had four of the nation's most senior company chairs. The panel consisted of ANZ Bank chairman John Morschel, Telstra's Catherine Livingstone, Boral and Westfarmers chairman Bob Every, and NAB's Michael Chaney. The need for a price on carbon emerged as a bit of surprise. This issue has got a long way to run but seems to be unstoppable at this stage.

Iron Ore Holdings

Iron Ore Holdings announced that it hopes to continue discussions with Rio Tinto about a sales deal, despite failing to finalise details before an agreement between the two companies lapsed on Sunday. The Kerry Stokes-controlled IOH first reached an agreement to sell Rio 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore a year in July 2008.

Macarthur Coal

Macarthur Coal announced full-year sales figures, with a record 5.32 million tonnes of coal sold. The figure represents a 15.3 percent increase compared to the previous year, and comes despite a fall in sales during the June quarter. Macarthur attributed the positive result to increased production - which rose 7.7 percent - and a sell-down of coal stocks.
